What a mess, we’re in the mid of week 24 and still I haven’t commented on the past week album, sorry everyone! You might not believe it, but been pretty busy lately. Not that I’ve done anything productive at all, well, work volume has alarmingly increased and we’re in peak season, but apart from that, let’s say I’ve been self indulging and done some mess outdoors 🙂
Anyway, you know I’m about to see Ryan Adams in Oporto, more or less in 45 hours or so, thus I’m basically listening to his albums, except when working or going to places. I’ve been forcing myself to listen to other stuff, but variety hasn’t been my best, to be honest.
10 days ago I went with my fratello Kiko to a very popular and probably the best record store in Barcelona, Revolver. Gotta say the worst thing you can do after having some beers is going to such place. I’m quite broke as you already know, owe a lot of dough to the damn IRS, and Oporto getaway and Azkena are right here, yet this didn’t stop me to buy some stuff., beside my fratello took this CD and told me I HAD to have it. Couldn’t say NO, he also knows what I like and he’s good at recommending stuff, so I bought it.
Took me few days to feel in the mood to play #1, and when I did, I listened to the album like 5 times at once. I really love this way of discovering and enjoying new stuff. There’s so much stuff available at one single click on your keyboard, it’s easy you to become a compulsive music consumer, missing the essence, and judging 12 tracks by just a couple of listens. That’s not fair, nor pleasant, and sooner or later, you end up not being able to retain a shit. Miss my teenage days, when I listened to an album doing nothing else, laying on my bed, lights off…aaah! We are running so out of time, I always do something while playing music.
#1 is characterized by beautiful pop melodies totally influenced by The Beatles (pending subject to me, I’ve been more Stones fan), combined with cool electric riffs, and acoustic sounds, as Kiko told me, Big Star are, or better said, were, the pioneers in power pop wave, which later on, bands such as Redd Kross would follow.
I got charmed from the very first song, Feel, and kept on delighted by other tunes such as Thirteen, Don’t Lie to Me or My Life is Right, just to name some. To be honest, from top to bottom this #1 is simply marvelous, one of these albums which make you feel fine anytime.
I’ve purchased through Play.com (God bless that site) Radio City, Big Star’s second work, and if it’s as good as this one, this band will become a MUST in my life for sure.
Here is In The Street, as an appetizer
Fratello! Thanks again for keeping me in the right path.
