A couple of months ago I told you about the event of the year, the wedding of my great friends Artie and Mayra, which turned to be one of the coolest parties ever.
There was a pending issue since then, related to the wedding present. I advanced you in order not to ruin the surprise and being aware that Artie is a regular reader of Since My Baby Left Me, I had to keep the secret until I was back in Madrid.
As you can imagine, as soon as I landed, my sista was picking me up and we headed towards our friends’ house.
You have to understand all the parties involved were in a state of excitement. We knew was the present was, but had only seen it through this pic, and the couple hadn’t the slightest clue about what the handmade present could me.
Not sure whether you’re familiarized with Neil Young’s album covers, this kind of scarecrow belongs to one of the most beautiful albums ever, Harvest Moon, released 20 years ago. Best thing is that all people involved in this present love this album. God bless this coincidence.
Weddings have become such a difficult and expensive event, at the end of the day most of guests give money to the couples as a present, so they can cover the reception expenses. I’m sorry but I don’t like it this way, once again my romanticism is reconfirmed, if you are someone I really love, a close friend, my philosophy will keep me from transferring money to a bank account. I want you to have something which, on one hand, reminds you of a wedding, and on the other, of myself.
I counted of Agnès and Kiko for looking for something special and different, and soon I had one of the best ideas ever.
I got acquainted with Bryn Perrot, aka Deerjerk, via Instagram, more or less a year ago, and was impressed with her captures of the wood carved pieces she was working on. Not only for being something new, but what I was impressed the most was with all the imagery and symbolism pervaded.
I had first contacted the artist, who lives in Morgantown, West Virginia, last November, in order to ask for some information regarding her pieces, you know, fares, catalogue, size of pieces… and Bryn confirmed she works on commission, which turns any of her pieces into something completely exclusive and unique, that of 1/1 limited edition.
While thinking of what the wedding present should be, we received the invitation for the reception, which included some verse lines belonging to Neil Young’s song Harvest Moon, one of my personal favorite, by the way.
When we were strangers I watched you from afar
When we were lovers I loved you with all my heart
I’ve always thought of Young to be a master in writing lyrics, being capable to put into words whatever we might feel, and build up the perfect tune for any situation.
Therefore I had it right in front of my eyes. They love Neil Young, we all love Neil Young, and Harvest Moon is also special, the piece had to be the front cover image.
I sent an email to my friends and they agreed right away, and then I had to contact Bryn to check whether this could be suitable for her. I was staying in Amsterdam those days, it was early February, and internet connection was super limited, yet I could arrange everything and go ahead with the plan.
It was at the end of February I woke up and while accomplishing my internet routines, I saw Bryn had started with the piece. Aaaah, so exciting! We wanted to see the final result, and the three of us were nervous.
The rest was all history. Everything was finished and sent on time, but parcel was blocked by Customs authorities and it had to undergo certain shitty bureaucratic procedure, which in Spain takes ages due to lack of efficiency and proactiveness, so the piece was unfortunately released just two days after the wedding. Such a pity!
Well, it wasn’t so bad after all as I was obliged to travel to Madrid eventually, to give the present, and now I’m spending a wonderful week here enjoying great weather and wonderful friends, thus, I only hope for Artie and Mayra it was worth the waiting. To be honest, I’m very proud of this present, because, regardless this might sound too cakey, it came from our hearts.
I will write a post talking about Bryn Perrot very soon, in fact, want to haver interviewed, in the meantime, if you want to be amused by her awesome talent, you chan have a look here She’s fantastic!
One more remark, did anyone notice Neil Young has been on the header of this blog for a couple of months too? hahahaha
