What a great day it was!

How many times have you enjoyed such a great time that you come to the conclusion it’s been one of the most thrilling days/time in your life? Think of it. Not many, huh?

I tend to enjoy spare time as much as possible, and always find amusement in very simple things. Watching movies, listening to records, water my plants, writing a post or just having a conversation. To sum up, my aim is never to get bored. I know some people unable to fill free time in something not necessarily productive, but just pleasant, except for sleeping. That’s not my situation, and as you already know, I feel very frustrated when I waste too much time sleeping due to hangovers or simply because I feel exhausted.

Anyway, I’m being too repetitive. Been to Zaragoza, last weekend, to attend a mini rock fest named ORF. This time Veronica, aka Dra Feelgood, was also joining me for one of our sessions as Las Tetis DJs on Saturday night to close the event at La Ley SEca. It was a good chance to go out in the afternoon for one of our intense open-air vermouths with close friends of mine, and some other guys attending the festival we are acquainted with through the music forum we participate in.

The mixture of different people getting on well was terrific, beer never abandoned us, and the quality of conversations and laughs was super high. I don’t know, everything was so easy and natural…

And then our session started, with high spirits and people absolutely in the mood for partying hard, so we gave them what the attendants demanded and spent more than 5 hours playing music nonstop super loud. Everybody was drinking, dancing and singing wildly. To be honest, I was damned excited when we jumped onto stage and friends were calling out “Tetis, tetis!” like craze.

Today it’s Tuesday night, and I’m still knackered. My voice’s ruined, my eyes are puffy and I’m very slow, both in motion and thinking. Fortunately we’ve not been  too busy at the office, otherwise it’d have been Hell, but man! No matter how much I complain now, It’s been worth every minute and every beer.

Every time I remember conversations, or see any pictures circulating, think of my friends, I can’t help smiling. Because at the end of the day, what is real happiness but a succession of these moments and memories?

*** Thanks Tani for the pic.

LAS TETIS @ SIBERIA ROCK FESTIVAL

Finally September has arrived. One of my favorite months, together with October and April and May. Yep, I’m kinda mid seasons girl, definitely.

I love September, not only because of my and some of my closest friends’ birthday anniversaries, but also because it’s the back-to-school month, no matter I cannot have two straight weeks of holidays until October. During summer all routines are gone, chaos and fun reigns and I reach the end of August a bit exhausted and fed up, to be honest. September is like resuming to regular routines, tours are announced, shows in town are scheduled and I feel like writing again. Weather is great as heat is losing its power and I sleep in my pajamas again and covered. Ah! And my hair fringe looks fine longer (this might be a silly remark for you, but of utmost importance to me).

There wasn’t a better way to mark this turning point that attending Siberia Rock Festival as guest DJ with my partner Verónica aka Dra Feelgood. Las Tetis went to Vitoria Rock City, fought and conquered, and returned safe, knackered but very happy after the successful Friday night session, and the great experience.

We both love this city we’ve been visiting quite often in the past 10 days as it hosts our favorite rock festival, Azkena. Vitoria-Gasteiz is the capital city of the Basque Country, and it’s beautiful. It’s not very big, population does not even reach 250000 inhabitants, yet it’s a very livid city, always hosting events, and offering many activities on the streets, no matter the weather is usually rough there, marked by  cold and rain most of the year. Pintxos and zuritos, nice parks and streets, bars and venues, and super friendly people, I really dig Vitoria.

The organizers of this 3 day festival focused on promoting the local scene in the area through the support of the local authorities. Basque Country has always been quite respected and recognized for supporting arts, sports and culture, and the project these three young entrepreneurs submitted was finally greenlighted.

Considering none of them had any experience in this field, although they were assisted by the right people, it’s unbelievable the way the festival developed. Punctuality, professionalism, perfect logistics on one hand, and a very respectful and cheerful audience on the other.

The quality of sound inside the tent was neat and outstanding, and the level of the bands was impressive. I had a crush on a stoner band named Arenna I will talk about in a near future, as I purchased their last album after the show. They were a blast!

We were scheduled to start after the shows at 1AM. We were nervous and a bit concerned about the weather, and it had been pouring the day before and there was this light drizzle showing up from time to time, which could bring heavier rain at some point. But it didn’t and we could offer our session in a very cool terrace next to the gardens the shows had taken place.

We had never been so comfortable dj’n as we had plenty of space for moving, handle our stuff and proceed with our one to one session, which lasted until 4AM.

We had only selected CDs to bring from Barcelona but didn’t prepare anything in advance as we follow our mood and instinct in every session, beside, preparing a 3h session is killing all the spontaneity of the event, living no place for requests, improvisation or having fun. To be honest, it’s better to switch on a computer and leave it working rather than having one person doing nothing there. Thus when the time arrived, after agreeing on the importance of the starter, I clearly saw that Bossheaded had to open the session. Tough, straight, powerful and party animal, this song was an unwritten declaration of intentions: have fun and rock as if there was no tomorrow.

What we had brought with us was out outfit, well, our t-shirts, which were customized with our personal logo designed by Miguel, Veronica’s boyfriend.  The slogan says “Las Tetis. Rock n’ roll DJs Supersexy to the max”. The last part makes me laugh, to be honest, but t-shirts looked cool on us, gotta admit. You know, this uniform stage wear outfit always reminds me of the earlier years of Gluecifer 😉 This time with boobs. Ha!

The session was a blast, surrounded by acquaintances who celebrated every song and a very enthusiastic audience we didn’ know, people seemed to enjoy a good time, some were dancing, others were hard on air guitar, people singing whistling and clapping. This was the closest session to a proper rock show I’ve ever experience. we had everybody’s attention who were waiting for the next hit to start, and when it did, party was on again. Whoa! It was aaaaawesome! It’s gonna be hard when I start playing songs at Psycho on my own next Thursday. ..

This time the playlist’s been created through Grooveshark, however the embedding codes do not work here so I encourage you to listen to it here. The positive thing is that except for a song by Supagroup, all tunes are there. 48 songs for your pleasure I suggest you play as loud as fuck. In case you wanna know, I started odds, but due to this song missing, from Nasty Ho/Swimwear, pairs are my responsibility.

Thanks Vitoria and thanks SRF for an awesome weekend. It’s been terrific!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PSYCHO!

I feel like telling you a short story, about my favorite joint in Barcelona, Psycho R&R Club.

Early June 2010, I was at Moog, a venue in Barcelona, about to enjoy a show of The Lizards, one of my favorite local bands, when Charly introduced me to Ricard as his associate. I didn’t have any idea about him having business, he’s not such kind of guy, thus I had to be clarified. They were opening a new rock club in a month, close to one of the hottest musical spots in town, Apolo, a two venue complex where many great gigs are scheduled and clubbing nights are a reference for hipsters, tourists and party animals. Great strategy, plus, as far as I was acquainted, being dj’s and popular in the local scene, plus rock as the main philosophy the club was to follow, success was almost guaranteed.

It felt like yesterday when I was visiting the guys at the club after The Gaslight Anthem show, the night before the grand opening, and everything was chaos. It was then when I met the third partner in crime, Gonzalo, who asked me for cigarettes and took some sips from my warm beer. We got on well right away. The situation was close to drama, so I volunteered to help them the following day after working. And I did it.

The 3-4 hours some friends spent hand to hand cleaning the whole place, assembling stools, organizing the bar, collecting garbage and having everything ready, were insane and super intense, but hey! We all made it on time, and I’m proud of being part of that. As Gonzalo was saying, we all remember it in a romantic way, but if we stop thinking about the whole situation, it was crazy.

As all the early stages of business, clubs and everything, there are many technical issues to be sorted out till you are on the run. As the time has passed, the joint has been capturing its essence, full of decoration referring to bands and films I love and grew up with, thus it’s a warming place, and I’m not talking about the nonstop problems with air conditioning system, but with the feeling of being at home among friends. Whenever I’m at Psycho I feel welcome, if you know what  I mean.

They also sorted things out regarding dj’n sessions permissions, and now they have full booked monthly program, featuring many guest dj’s and lots of styles, from punk rock to funky, soul, garage and r&b.

First time I was invited to dj on my own there were technical problems as most people play music with laptops aor vinyls. I use CD’s and one of the players didn’t work that night. Thus, my actual debut was on New Year’s Eve, for closing the night, and everything was fantastic that time. I enjoyed a second night on my own in February, which was also great, but you know, it’s great and funnier to have a partner in crime, thus, since April, Dra Feelgood and I have provided the punk rock, hard rock, stoner, 90’s and other sounds fix Psycho Rock N’ Roll club required.

It was Ricard who christened us as Las Tetis, aka The Titties, and to be honest, we fuckin’ love this business card, which everybody easily remembers…so it’s great.

It’s been one year since Psycho opened its doors, and it’s alive and kicking, being a hot spot and a point of reference in the rock scene in Barcelona, and considering the times we’re living, this city focusing on tourist and fashion bars and clubs oriented, and the “retirement” of rock n’ roll places, it’s really to be praised the efforts  and passion Charly, Ricard and Gonzalo, have put on this enterprise, I wish we can celebrate for many more years.

I’ll never be grateful enough for allowing me and Veronica to be part of their dream, making me the official guinea pig of mojitos, BEST IN TOWN, when they learned to prepare them, and being the source and play of amusement for so many crazy and unforgettable nights.

And finally, this weekend’s been celebration nonstop and Las Tetis had their time yesterday playing some tunes to warm up the night ahead. Pure fun!

We’ve been requested to create a page on Facebook where we’ll announce future events we’re involved in so, everybody is updated. I’ll let you know in case you’re interested, and you, yeah you! in case you visit Barcelona for some days, you MUST visit this place. Here’s the link to Facebook

And here is the playlist of the songs I played yesterday, short but intense, as Female Trouble and Ficus No Dj had to make us dance and sweat afterwards

LAS TETIS KICK OUT THE JAMS, MOTHERF***ERS!

Summer is finally here and its arrival was properly celebrated last weekend, or at least so we tried.

On one hand, the night fest of St. Joan on Saturday in Barcelona, with bonfires on the beach, horrible firecrackers everywhere, and many open air home parties, to celebrate the shortest night. And on the other, our contribution to start this first summer weekend as it deserved, with a dj’n session at Psycho R&R club, performed by myself together with my CD soul mate, Verónica, aka Dra Feelgood.

Our last session was a complete success thanks to the Record Store Day, and having in mind that the big night out was on Saturday, we were a bit afraid of poor attendance, something that’s never discouraged from playing the best music possible to people at bars, but of course, being involved in a partying atmosphere is always a great motivation.

Truth is Las Tetis, The Titties in English, were ready and willin’ to rock the night, and finally many unexpected people came by, which was terrific.

Never told you about my dj’n experience in depth. I cannot consider myself a proper dj for many reasons, first I’m not a pro, and second I play CD’s and not vinyls. This is a leisure activity I’ve been given the opportunity since I was 20 in Zaragoza, and have been carrying out sporadically over these years.

Truth is skills have been gently increasing especially in the last couple of years, and the knowledge of new sounds and bands has been a bless in this sense as to find my own style, because it doesn’t matter what you hear, if no obligation nor pressure are involved, you develop your tastes and adapt them to your sessions, providing a kind of trademark. Being a dj is not exactly artistic but, it’s a fact that thanks to the style you eventually attract certain kind of audience, which doesn’t need to be your crowd friends, if you know what I mean.

When I started, Thursday was the day scheduled for the sessions, and were monographs based on the discography of certain bands or artists. My first night was dedicated to Janis Joplin. My former  boyfriend and his cousin used to called me Janis Joplin, as I used to sing in a band, loved Southern Comfort and was like a mess of a woman, in terms of appearance. They found these resemblances, I don’t know, perhaps we’re more alike in terms of love failures, hahaha! The funny thing is that I seldom listen to Joplin nowadays, love many songs, but I’m never in the mood nor connect to her at all.

Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Guns n’ Roses, Led Zeppelin (!!!) came after, how could I dare? I didn’t have the complete discographies! Guess when you’re young you aren’t afraid and accuracy and professionalism are concepts you’re not very related to.

After my UK days, back in my hometown, I started dj’n creating events, such as Kiss parties and that stuff, because under the influence of new bands and styles, people weren’t ready yet for that, at least at pubs I was hanging out, but eventually I was allowed to have my sessions from time to time.

First sessions in Barcelona were carefully studied and arranged, marking the suitable songs of the CD’s, gathering styles and moments, and following schedules. Let’s say improvisation in a scale from 0 to 10, was 2-3, and was moving upwards as I was more self-confident.

Last stage, which started in November 2010, when Veronica suggested we could try to dj together at The Outsiders, is being the funniest and most interesting one, in the sense that sharing the space and time is lots of fun, enhances improvisation, moving from 3-4 to 9-10, and it’s super dynamic. We’ve been playing at different venues, with different people, and in different circumstances. I’ve gone solo, as you already know, but love when Las Tetis are together. Veronica is more into Southern rock, alt country, root sounds and hard rock, and I’m 90’s, stoner, hardcore, punk rock and other stuff, thus the alliance of strengths, tits, and styles always mean epic nights. I might sound too proud and and vain, but believe me, we’re good, and people rather than complain, congratulate us.

One more time, I’ve created a playlist on Spotify for you to listen to my part of the Combat Night. Hope you like it!

IT’S NOT A PROBLEM YOU CAN STOP IT’S ROCK N’ ROLL

It had been long time since the last night I shared mixing board with my friend Dra Feelgood, aka Veronica. We had been together with 4 Hands from Hell playing some tunes in Xmas, but wasn’t the same. We together work together very well, and our feel free philosophy seems to work better and better.

I was really in the mood for Saturday night session @ Psycho R&R club, for being the Record Store Day, and especially  because some close friends had confirmed their attendance, so the motivation required was fulfilled and I wanted to have lots of fun.

I think what it’s really interesting is that we have very different musical backgrounds and tastes. Veronica is more into classics, more blues and country rooted music, and I, on the other hand, was raised into the 90s sounds, you know, Seattle scene, stoner, punk rock and the trends my favorite magazine used to remark most. Thus, if you get the chance to attend one of our sessions might listen to The Rolling Stones, Hank III and Whitesnake, but also Warrior Soul, Orange Goblin or The Wildhearts can blow your head. As we see it, and as long as we get the audience high spirited, anything goes.

And seems that we succeeded, as I remember many people coming  to the board, not only for requests, but also to congratulate us for our musical choices. You can imagine what effect caused upon us to be flattered. No better upper, that I can tell.

As you already know from some time, I’m trying to keep track of the set list of the songs I play, not only for the record, but also for publishing the list here and create a playlist, and to be aware of mood, my choice in certain moment and the way I create certain situations.

I’m glad things are changing, and I’m super proud of improvising 100%, so every session is like a challenge, and I’m glad I’m starting to add stuff I hadn’t considered before.

Unfortunately euphoria, party time and the booze, only allows me to write down my selection of songs, thus in a playlist, it might look weird.

I’ve created this playlist on Spotify, It’s not a problem you can stop, but there are some songs missing. The Hellacopters’ Grande Rock album is not available, Demolition 23 does not exist, and I haven’t been able to find Slave To The Grind anymore. So here you are the actual tracklist of songs I played @ Psycho.

I really hope you like them

Fingers crossed for a new session ASAP, I really can’t wait too long.

MISS BROWNSTONE AND DRA FEELGOOD STRIKE BACK

Yeah, that’s me with a friend dj’n at a really cool pub called Outsiders, here in Barcelona.

Since I met Dra Feelgood, we’re entertaining or at least trying it real hard with nice and cheerful songs. Most repertoire we select is rock, some parts are more easy listening and others real tough, still our main aim is YOU to have fun.

Remember, in case you cannot make it this Saturday, once in a month we’ll keep on burning cd’s for your pleasure.
