BYE BYE OUTSIDERS, I MISS YOU ALREADY

And once again the theory of Barcelona doesn’t rock anymore has been confirmed.

It’s been 7 years already since I took a couple of suitcases and a carrier bag and moved to the city. It’s a fact I love the city, but going out to cool rockin’ joints is getting more and more difficult.

I’m not talking about the rock discos you have to pay for admission, and are packed with people from overseas on vacation and getting-laid hunters. Nope, I refer to bars and pubs open on a daily basis, where you can crash any time and listen more interesting stuff than Highway to Hell (with all due respect to AC/DC, of course).

Barcelona doesn’t rock in this sense, very few places, far from each other. One of the things I used to love most from my hometown was places were quite near, so you could have a beer in 4-5 places if you felt like, staying longer in those playing the best stuff for your mood. Same happens in Madrid, you go to Malasaña, and can listen to rock, stoner, garage or hard rock in several places few meters far from the other.

Here is like, you decide where to go, and stay all night till closing time. Not many options unfortunately, adding the handicap if you wanna change, you depend on public transport many times.

Once this said, as you know, since last November I’ve been dj’n on a monthly basis approx at Outsiders Rock Bar, sometimes with Dra Feelgood, some others by myself, and a couple of weeks ago shared the sound commands with Dj Nando.

It was then, when I heard the sad news, due to personal reasons and other stuff, not worth talking about here (none of my business either), Outsiders’ closing was announced.

Carlos and Fran, two passionate rock lovers, decided to start this enterprise, which unfortunately, after one year finished. Opening a bar and keeping it alive in a city in which rock is not fashionable is tough work. They were constantly thinking on promo and activities, parties and some people like me were contributing to add more value to the place, but that wasn’t enough. A bar can suck you dry, and it’s not money, which of course also counts, I mean by saying this. Energy and passion can vanish if you don’t get some visible results. Guess the guys got fed up and decided to go on with their lives. Fair enough.

Selfishly speaking is a pity, because I’d got used to dj on a monthly basis, fulfilling my ego by playing my stuff from time to time. I gotta thank the guys to let me be part of the amusement of the bar, and for making me feel warm welcome every time I was hanging there.

On the other hand, pity as well, for another place with rock atmosphere disappears. It was a cool place, quite comfy, and everything nicely arranged. I’m quite loyal to the places I feel fine in, and usually pays them visit.

With this post, once again, just wanna thank Frank and Carlos (and Sandra, one of the nicest waitresses I’ve ever met always smiling), for making me feel at home, and for counting on me for dj’n. Also for their efforts in bringing back rock to the shitty, and for those great mojitos which cheered my sessions up so much. Amazing nights, I reckon.

Thanks, thanks and thanks, and long live rock n’ roll!!

CALM AFTER THE STORM

Today it’s my first Saturday with absolutely no plans at all in months, I swear. It’s strange, but at the same time I really had the need for relaxing and chilling out a bit, or at least, my body is giving me clear signs of exhaustion. My mind is perfect, though and my pocket is broke, as usual.

Saturday has started bittersweet. Agnès and Kiko have departed to Madrid this morning, to start their new life together. Crossed feelings were mixed. It’s true you can stay perfectly in touch with anyone anywhere thanks to technologies and all the stuff, but lately, my sista and I were spending most weekends together and have had so much fun…I’m really gonna miss her in this way, going out, getting drunk, laughing and joking, our gossip times…everything. On the other hand I feel very proud of being the one who introduced them to each other, and in some way, feel very attached to this new couple. They’re both very good friends of mine, have been very supportive with me in rough times and I just wish them the best.

Right before my fav couple left, I started playing Elvis 70’s box, Walk a Mile In My Shoes. I’m not good at farewells and had promised myself not to cry so Agnès could make the trip as much relaxed as possible. It’s been tough to endure, but guess I just dropped a couple of subtle tears so don’t think she’s even noticed them. Despite the drama avoided, I think I’m very good at soundtracks and I’ll always remember this moment, with Elvis singing I’m leaving (I swear!!), giving each other a never ending hug that eventually had to come to an end. Aaaah, man! I’m missing these great times already, no matter I know for sure we’re staying constantly in touch and will all make great effort to see each other as often as we can afford.

It’s been after all this, I’ve decided to stay home, not doing anything in particular but listening the 5 CD’s of the box (I’ll talk about it later), and recalling the set list of songs I played yesterday at the session shared with DJ Nando at Outsiders Rock Bar.

And yes, once again last night was a blast, not only because at the end of the day, thinking about it, DJ’n for pleasure means drinks for free while listening to the music I really love. Ain’t that great? I love it!

Good friends by my side encourage me to play the best tunes I can, trying to please everyone, and I think I did, according to the reaction of my “crew”, which seemed to be delighted.

Once this said, here it is the list of what I played last night, divided into 3 parts, because Nando had his time focusing on more hard rock stuff. For the first time in my life, I didn’t play any Guns N’ Roses song, and don’t know if anyone realized about it. No regrets though.

Thus, this was the starting of my Widow Anniversay Weekend, not bad, huh? Today I’m wasted, tomorrow I have plans already with some friends. Really, I can’t complain of the life I’m living, even less of the friends I have. Once again, despite much shit we have to swallow sometimes, I do reckon Life is great!

THE DAY AFTER MAYHEM

Still recovering from Friday night, I can only say it was a blast. Still got fresh memories in my mind…well, up to a certain moment everybody got too much drunk and I ended up moonwalking in the middle of the bar…what a laugh!

Once again, my entourage was there as supportive as usual, and I felt encouraged to play the best tunes my mood was up to, and think the result was a success. At lest it seems so, another unknown guy congratulated me on the music selection. That really makes me feel great and flattered for real, your friends can give a subjective point of view for friendship involvement, so when a stranger comes to you and says “you rule”, yeah! I think I rule the school, hahaha!

Well, here is the list of all songs I can recall…as usual there were problems with one of the CD players, I had two mojitos which caused I wasn’t focused on writing down all the songs , but still most of the four hour session is here. Hope you like it!

EASTER PROMISES

Easter holidays are here and I’m broke! Need to plan some activities so I don’t get bored, nor all my friends in the same situation.

As you already know I’m lucky to DJ in a cool rock bar here In Barcelona called Outsiders. I suggested this weekend for many reasons, I’m broke and wanna have some fan, it’s one of my closest friends birthday and if possible, to warm up the bar with as many people as possible. Seems that it’s gonna be another good night and although don’t expect the place overcrowded, many friends have confirmed they’re in the mood for the event.

I’ll try to register all the songs I play, as with the last month session. Don’t have anything prepared at all, don’t have the slightest idea, but sure I’ll come up with good ideas in the end. Just a beer and friends surrounding me are enough to help me finding the inspiration. I’m in good spirits as well, no matter it’s being a tough week. I’ll let you know the outcome for sure, although it would be greater if you could make it on Friday 😉

I haven’t planned anything yet for Saturday, it’s Saint Jordi, the day of the rose and the book. Guys give roses to their chicks, girls give them books for presents. As I’m not in such traditions and don’t have boyfriend either, I’ll probably buy a couple of albums I have in mind: Sensory Overdrive of Michael Monroe (I don’t have it yet, this is an unforgivable sin!), and The Taking, the album my beloved Loaded have just released this week.

Sunday is to be another awesome day, cuz I’m having another Grindhouse session with my friends at my Hellhouse. Three films have been chosen, this time is just for laughs: Slapshot, Back to School and Napoleon Dynamite. If you feel like joining us, give us a call, bring a six-pack and let’s have fun.

Cool plans, ain’t they?

ANOTHER DAY IN THE LIFE

PART I

Sometimes I’ve got the feeling I haven’t done much during the day but actually I haven’t stopped at all.

It’s twenty past midnight and I’m wasted.  Haven’t yet recovered  from last weekend, too much party and very few sleep, plus I went to a gig last night and have barely slept 4 hours and a half. However I don’t feel like going to bed.

Woke up this morning at 6.15 am and had to go to the train station. At quarter  to eight was back home, had a coffee, posted a topic on this blog, took a quick shower and went to work, 9 hours at the office, and they’ve passed reaaaaally slow.

Back home this evening, I’ve done the washing up, prepared lunch for tomorrow (pasta! Yummy!!), tidy up the kitchen, write more for the blog, listened to a cople of albums and instead of relaxing at home, I’ve gone  to my friend Pauline’s for a couple of beers, pizza and some gossip.

And here I am, completely exhausted. Not a bad day, huh? Still I think I haven’t done enough. Why isn’t it possible day lasts at least four more hours??

How are your weekly days like? You got programmed or regular activities? You just get back from work and don’t do much stuff?  Are you  an active person? Improvisation has a place in your life?

Should I take it easier? Probably yes, but then,  a sentence I read from my friend Agnès comes to my mind, at least twice a day: One life for me is not enough

Another Day in the Life

PART II

Quarter past one, already Friday (yes!!!) and have few beers in my body.

Yesterday I was talking about a prolific day which didn’t seem so to me, today I haven’t done much but I feel  happier and more optimistic. Why?

It hasn’t been an outstanding day, in fact it’s started weird because I’ve felt asleep right after the alarm rang. There was just one working properly, but it’s the weaker and didn’t pay much attention, I was so fine in my bed, uhmmmm! Consequently I’ve arrived work half an hour late. It’s been ok today though, not much work but entertaining, getting to know the new colleagues at the office, smoking A LOT (baaaad!) and passing time.

When work was over, I’ve gone to my friend Mireia’s, have a beer, and then we’ve gone  to  an Irish pub, for she was to celebrate St. Patrick’s with some friends. I’m not much interested in this celebration, the only Patrick I know is my beloved Patrick Bateman, so I’ve drunk a pint of Guinness and then moved my ass to meet one of my best mates, Jaume.

We’ve spent approx 3 hours drinking Coronita’s and  gossiping about people as usual (our favorite sport). Basically, heating engines for tomorrow: I have my solo dj’n session @ the Outsiders Rock Bar. A good friend of mine is to assist me with the session, but unfortunately I’m positive he’s not gonna make it (pity, you don’t know what you’re missing).

And here I am now, still tired, a bit more wasted and broke than yesterday, but feeling alright. Rain has stopped and sun is shining again, plans for the weekend are promising, and I’ll be surrounded by friends. What else can I ask for? I know what, but won’t tell you here, hahaha!

Same shit, different dayDemolition 23 were definitely right . Anyway, enjoy your weekend!!

A VERY FILM WEEKEND

This weekend has been another great one. I cannot complain at all lately, I’m having lots of fun, fortunately enjoying good companion all the time, seems that people are up to share activities with me, maybe because I’m available for anything. I love it!

On Friday I wanted to chill out a bit, I had already gone out for beers on Thursday, and wanted to take it easy this time, so I went to my friend Mireia’s house for watching a movie. Choice was my duty, she was buying beer…not a bad deal, huh? She hates horror movies, like most of girls do, so zombies were not an option. I picked up 4 movies: AMERICAN PSYCHO, JACKIE BROWN, RUMBLE FISH and ANIMAL HOUSE. In the end, Patrick Bateman was our definite motivation…guess why J  I love American Psycho, well, the fact that Mary Harron was the director smoothed the extreme of the story Bret Easton Ellis shocked the world with, helped this film to become more popular and everyone was aware who Bateman is, turning Bale into the perfect Wall street Psycho, and probably reaching his best role as an actor, for many of us.

Saturday was the busiest and most complete day: went to the movies to see Black Swan, then headed to an acoustic show my friend Evil Mr. Sod was headlining, and ended up at the Outsiders enjoying Dj Nando’s greatest hits while drinking mojito with my friend Jaume.

I will dig into Aronofsky’s last work deeper in Popcorn and Movies, but I can advance I did like it a lot.

On the other hand, the show offered my old pal Evil Mr. Sod, just armed with an acoustic guitar was excellent. I might not sound objective, but he’s got one of the most powerful and solid voices I’ve heard, and considering he’s Spanish, worse, Canarian, his English pronunciation is outstanding.

He came to introduce El Cuervo EP, a pack of acoustic songs smelling a bit like Johnny Cash but with that special personal  touch the Canarian always tips us with. Songs such as I Love the Way You Hate Me, Elvis Made Me What I Am Today, or Boy, You gonna Be Alright help me  to believe in good artists in this cursed country, unable to encourage a decent rock movement beyond the underground circuits. This guy lives in Berlin, and probably he’s more successful there than in his own country. This sucks, but I’m glad he can make his living by playing, no matter it’s not a wealthy one, at least when we are old, he will be able to admit he did what he wanted to…not everybody can say that.

The gig was great, I enjoyed lyrics the most, and he’s the kind of guy who loves interacting with the audience, something I love, especially in such intimate venues.

By the way, the venue was called Shake it! And found it very appropriate for this kind of gigs. Seems that due to so much closing of live music venues, some places are encouraging the acoustic, an initiative to be applauded.

And yesterday was the definite evening: Movies @ My Hellhouse. That was awesome, full of beer, popcorn, chips and laughs, 6 friends joined me to spend some hours watching three films: Walter Hill’s Trespass, He Was a Quiet Man and Los Bingueros, the definite Spanish Cañí movie. Such was the success of the movie, we’re arranging a date for going to play Bingo to the worst Bingo joint we can find. I know it’s gonna be so much fun!

Moreover, we’ve all agreed to have one monthly regular session at my place, so if you’re interested in watching movies in a very noisy environment, cramped on my couch (if you are lucky to get some space), drinking beer and having a good laugh, you’re more than welcome.

MISS BROWNSTONE AND DRA FEELGOOD STRIKE BACK

Yeah, that’s me with a friend dj’n at a really cool pub called Outsiders, here in Barcelona.

Since I met Dra Feelgood, we’re entertaining or at least trying it real hard with nice and cheerful songs. Most repertoire we select is rock, some parts are more easy listening and others real tough, still our main aim is YOU to have fun.

Remember, in case you cannot make it this Saturday, once in a month we’ll keep on burning cd’s for your pleasure.
